Need help with your bills? What to know & where to go

Houston area families struggling to keep up with household costs may be able to get help with food, utility bills and other basic needs through BakerRipley and other community programs.

BakerRipley offers utility assistance to eligible residents in Harris, Brazoria and Galveston counties. The program can help with electricity and gas bills, with applications opening every two months.

Christina Cave with BakerRipley says people should reach out as soon as they know they may have trouble paying their next bill.

“As soon as you get that bill, or you know that you won’t be able to cover that, reach out to us, she said,”

Cave says applicants should start gathering their paperwork before applying, including their utility bills, proof of residency and proof of income.

“Read everything, because it is very clear what is the paperwork that is needed, said Cave”

Applicants can submit information electronically or in person. Cave says those applying online should make sure documents are legible and that they are submitting the correct, current information.

“If you are sending that electronically, make sure that it’s legible and that you are sending the correct information, she said.”

BakerRipley does not provide assistance with water bills.

The organization also operates monthly food fairs at its four community centers, providing food through a partnership with the Houston Food Bank.

Cave says people also shouldn’t automatically assume they earn too much to qualify for assistance.

“Don’t assume because I may do a little bit more than what I believe is low income, I don’t qualify, she said.”

Some BakerRipley programs do not have the same income requirements as utility assistance.

The organization also offers adult education, free tax preparation for eligible residents, senior services, Head Start programs and assistance for veterans.

If someone is denied assistance, Cave recommends contacting United Way 211, which can connect residents with programs and services available in their communities.

“As soon as you know that you need something, reach out. Don’t wait and don’t panic, said Cave.”
