The man charged in the shooting of an 18-month-old girl inside an apartment on Chicago's Southwest Side was ordered held until trial on Monday.
The child was shot in the head early Saturday morning, and was last reported in critical condition.
Police announced Sunday night that Davaris Washington, 38, of the Chatham neighborhood, was charged with one felony count each of reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of an automatic weapon, reckless conduct, and possession of a firearm as a repeat felony offender.
Police said just after midnight Saturday morning, Washington fired a gun inside an apartment in the 6400 block of South Mozart Street in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, where police sources said the girl was sitting in a car seat in the living room.
The child was struck in the back of the head by gunfire, and was taken to the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition, police said.
At his first court appearance on Monday, prosecutors said Washington was dating the girl's mother, and invited her to his apartment on Saturday. When she got there, she placed her daughter's car seat on the floor of the apartment, facing the windows as the girl was sleeping.
When Washington walked into the room, he was holding a gun in one hand and a drill in the other. Prosecutors said he thought he was "revving up" the drill but instead pulled the trigger on the gun, which was equipped with a "switch" device to act as a machine gun, firing multiple rounds. Two bullets struck the car eat, hitting the baby as she slept in the car seat.
Prosecutors said Washington gave the gun to a neighbor and asked them to hide it, without telling them what had happened.
Police arrested Washington minutes after the shooting and recovered the gun and two magazines from the neighbor's apartment, according to prosecutors.
A neighbor said he saw police bring a man out of the building.
"Police go inside the building, they put the guy in handcuffs and put him in custody," said neighbor Jesus Salgado.
Prosecutors said Washington had five previous felony convictions, including drug and weapons charges, and was not allowed to possess a gun.
A judge ordered Washington detained at Cook County Jail while he awaits trial. He's due back in court on Friday.
A police source said a woman was also taken into custody for attempting to conceal the weapon, but on Monday morning, police said Washington was the only person arrested.
